Devil’s Food White Out Cake ~ TWD

17 Feb

IMG_9418.JPG A classic example of something my husband always says to me when he discovers what I am doing.  Makes me laugh.  ”You haven’t made this recipe before and your going to serve it to guests, tonight?”  ”Well, yea!?!” is usually my response.  He rolls his eyes and just laughs at me.  Do you do that?  I am that fly by the seat of my pants girl.  How else are you going to find out if  the food is good, right?   IMG_9423.JPG

I’ve never made this  recipe before so there were some ups and downs.  As of this writing the cake has not been cut and tasted other than the crumbs and the remnants of cake batter in the mixing bowl.  Which by the way were really pretty good.   By all appearances the cake is nice and moist.  That is a relief with a dark chocolate cake.

You know that recipe I haven’t tried before?  I’m sending it (minus one piece in the frig) to work with my husband so maybe his coworkers can hash out if it is something I should buy 8″ cake pans for future baking and refining.  Tomorrow I will post an update after I have a taste.  Yum! Thank you to Stephanie of Confessions of a City Eater for choosing this wonderfully fun recipe this week.  Don’t forget to check out the cake art of the entire Tuesdays With Dorie Blog roll.  It should be so amazing to see all the black and white cakes.  The recipe for this weeks baking art is here and at Stephanie’s site.  All of the TWD bakers are baking from Dorie Greenspans Baking From My Home to Yours.   IMG_9429.JPG

IMG_9393.JPG Thank you for visiting here and I hope you enjoy your cake this week.  See you next week for Carmel Crunch Bars.

Yes I do that too LOL! Your cake looks fabulous, looks like you had better luck crumbling your cake layer than I did. But all in all it was delish!

I do that too! Sometimes it’s like I purposely make something that I’ve never done because I loved the added pressure..hahah. Your cake looks gorgeous Amy Ruth!

What adorable polka dots — a great idea! Hope you like the cake when you finally taste it.

Wow! That is one beautiful cake! Your layers are perfect! Oh, and my guests are almost always my guinea pigs. You’d think by now I’d have some go-to company recipes and wouldn’t experiment on them, but it seems like there is always something new that I’m dying to make, and it always seems like it’s a great excuse when company is coming! I guess maybe that’s why we pretty much only have really good friends over for dinner. We are just wild and crazy, I guess!

Absolutely get some 8″ pans. I got some used when a restaurant was going out of business for $2.

    Worth every penny.

    Yours looks great!

Oh man I always cook/bake things I have never tried before when having guests! And then halfway through, I get really nervous and think, “Why didn’t I cook anything that I have made before!” and semi-apologize when I serve it for fear that it may be bad! Your cake looks great, though, and I’m sure it was a hit!

AmyRuth, your cake is so pretty – you got such nice crumbs, lol! And I think you are just a member of the Very Daring Club, to serve something new to guests. Why not? (I mean, what are they going to do, complain about dessert?)

You were smart to send the cake with your husband. I wish I had done the same. Right now it’s in my downstairs fridge, calling my name.

I think you’ll like it. I do the same thing- make something the first time for a party.

Oh man oh man. That cake looks phenomenal. It’s been far too long since I had cake, especially anything like that. You should order some of those Patric Chocolate bars or nibs, I believe he has ones for baking. It was so intense.

You know, I never do test runs of recipes before giving them to others either. Sometimes it makes me nervous, but for the most part I just roll with it :) The cake looks absolutely stunning!

your cake looks good, i like the polka dots. at least with recipes for the first time people usually get more honest with their opinions which produces great feedback. it’s not like they have to worry about possibly offending a family’s tried and trued recipe or anything. :P

  22. pamela 17. Feb, 2009 at 9:18 pm #

I’m with you on being adventurous and trying new things! I am sure that anyone who tried the cake will enjoy it. Hope that was the case! It looked great!
