Dorie’s Sweet Potato Biscuits ~ TWD

20 Oct

Sweet Potatoes are a little mystifying to me.   I never know what I’m getting when I pick one up out of the bin at the grocery store.  I like them and grew up eating sweet potato concoctions,  the southern version with toasted marshmallows on top.  Sweetness, sweetness.IMG_0584

It is the best way to eat your vegetables I would say.  Recently, while flipping through the final issue of Gourmet I noticed a small article near the back explaining all the varieties and further describing their appearance as well as nuances of their flavor.  Still I would probably have to have flash cards or the magazine with me to identify the different varieties.  Crazy huh? Erin of Prudence and Pennywise chose these unique and yummy biscuits to help usher in the upcoming Thanksgiving season.  They are pretty tasty especially with jam.  To top it all off, you can whip these up in no time and you can even use canned sweet potatoes if you want.  That’s remarkable.  This little biscuit is in the front section of Dorie Greenspans Baking From My Home to Yours along with some other types of biscuits and scones.  If you would like to give them a whirl, you can find the recipe on Erin’s blog or in Dorie’s book.    Hope you are enjoying the Fall season along with all the yumminess too.

Wow, I, too, am amazed by the flakiness of your biscuits. I enjoyed these as well, and you are right, they would be good with jam.

You have the perfect flaky biscuits! I’ve actually only eaten sweet potatos baked or bbqed. the first time I heard about serving them with marshmallows was in an episode of Paula. That sounds like fun and something I might try one day.

Perfect photos with that big jar of jam, I like how you can have these for breakfast or dinner. The last issue of Gourmet has been sitting on my kitchen table waiting to be opened for a week, it makes me sad knowing it will be the final time I enjoy it.

Ok – you’ve made biscuits before haven’t you? Fess up. How on earth did you get them to be so high and flakey and perfect? Love the addition of jam (not sure about the marshmallows yet), but these look (and I’m sure) taste fantastic! Very impressed!

I made these but never posted them because they were a true disaster! Haha! But yours look like what I wished mine turned out like! Gorgeous job! I was just looking through the last gourmet as well and I got so sad. I wish they could have had time to write a proper goodbye!

Amy these sound great. I usually make popovers for Thanksgiving but may have to try these instead and replace my sweet potato casserole with mashers this year. They look delicious! How did you like them?

  29. Vivian Boroff 29. Oct, 2009 at 8:42 am #

Great looking biscuits! It looks like you got a better rise out of them then most did. They look absolutely delicious.

    These look soooo good.

I make A LOT of biscuits. Mostly the plain buttermilk variety because I like to slather them in different kinds of jam :)
