Sugar Topped Molasses Spice Cookies & Cran~Apple Crisps
10 Nov
These recipes are from Dorie Greenspan’s book Baking From My Home to Yours. Since I assume by now that you are aware of the baking group called Tuesdays With Dorie, then you are probably also knowledgeable of how this game is played. You know the one, so I won’t explain myself.
Somewhere on this page you will see a photo of a beautiful Paula Dean pie plate. Do you see it? Around the end of October I opened my email to find an email from a lovely young Mom, Angie of Southern Grace Gourmet, who notified me that I had won the pie plate from her blog. I never win even though each time I enter a contest I tell myself, “Amy, someone is going to win it may as well be you.” Yea, I know… . Anyway, this time I scored. Of course, original intentions were to make a pumpkin pie. You see Angie has a post using pie pumpkins which inspired me to give it a try. However, I couldn’t resist baking the Cran-Apple Crisp in it. It worked perfectly. I love it! Thank you so much Angie and Mr. Random Picker Program! (whoever you are?)
Let it be said that the crisp is out of this world, thank you Dorie! Just one of those familiar tasty fall spice kind of treats. Super simple to make and the only additional ingredient I required was the fresh cranberries, duh…. tis the season. You must make and enjoy one or two or three or okay more spoonfuls. De-lish!
Now as far as those cookies go…. I love molasses! Know what? So does Corbin. He loves these cookies too. Sweet little guy. Well, he isn’t so little but it just makes me happy that he loves them. A Mom thing. Also, one must understand that this third child is very discriminating. A polite way of saying he is a picky eater. ugh! Well, I’ve made these for Corbin before during the fall season. The aroma brought the boy to life so tonight I whipped the dough out of the freezer and sliced off six little cookies to bake along while making the Cran-apple crisp. They were sort of a reward for taking these scrumptious photos, ya know. he he
One more order of business, the recipes of course can be found in Dorie’s wonderful book or if you like you may also find them at the following blogs, because these bakers are the lucky ones who took their turns choosing the recipes for this month. Isn’t it such a wonderful season?
Pamela of “Cookies” with Boys chose the cookies, ha ha do ya get it? cookies…. haha Okay, well the Sugar Topped Molasses Spice Cookies recipe can be found on her blog here.
Well, guess what? Sometime this month Em of The Repressed Pastry Chef will reveal to you the magic recipe for Cran-Apple Crisps. Just stop by for a visit. I know lots of others in the baking group have been baking up lots of special treats for their families and friends so please join in if you would like. All you need is the book, a blog and a visit to the TWD site to get yourself set to roll.
Thank you so much for stopping by. I really enjoyed sharing these treats with you this week. They were among some of my favorites from Dorie’s book. Hope you’ll like them too. (They weren’t even chocolate?)

I made the cookies this week too and WOW we totally loved them! In fact I think there are only two left LOL
That pie plate is beautiful! Congrats on your win, it’s always fun to win
I loved these cookies. Spicy, hot. And cannot wait to make the crisp this week.
both of yours came out perfectly
What a beautiful pie plate. I am definitely going to enter more contests. Your crisp looks perfect in it…seriously the perfect color to bring out those love colors in the crisp. Somehow my blue baking dish just does not see right now….LOL. Love the cookies, OMW the kids have me making these all the time, they really like them. Not sure that is a good thing, but they are kids and they swim a lot so I figure it’s better than chips…massive rationalization, I know. Great job on the cookies and the crisp…and TWO in one post…wow!
I have made both of these so far this month.
The cookies are fabulous, and even though I haven’t tried my crisp yet, I just know it is going to be good.
The crisp and the cookies look so good. Im glad youhave some new favorite recipes! I am going to make these in the next coming weeks.
Hey Amy Ruth,
your dishes look spectacular. I am going to make the crisp on Thursday, but I am allergic to oats and I am trying to decide what to put on top instead of oats. Any suggestions? I wonder how crunched up ginger snaps would be? Since you have tried the crisp let me know what you think would work the best. I’m going to take it to a supper club dinner on Friday night, along with a pecan pie trifle. hope you are doing well!
I never win either – but am so glad the tide has turned for you! Wow, 2 desserts in one week – very impressed, with the crisp, cookies AND the beautiful dessert plate. You deserve it! Both look phenomenal, as usual – and I’ll join your “molasses-lover” club!
Thanks so much for baking the cookies with me! I’m glad you and Corbin liked them. I can’t get enough of them! Congrats on that pie plate. Very pretty!
Mmm, great looking crisp! Can’t wait to try that one next.
I enjoyed playing around with the molasses cookies this week and realized 5 days after making them they are still really good!
That apple crisp looks out of this world!! YUM! I could eat the crisp part on its own!!!
Oh, it’s a twofer today! Both look delicious and wonderful. YUM.
I love that pie plate! You did well, my friend. Both the crisp and cookies look so darn good.
I thought the crisp was sooo good, too. And the simplicity of it just made it even better!
Yes, I have a pie plate kinda like that. I use it next time. Good idea.
Ooh, two for one week! I loved both of these recipes, and will be baking both again. Maybe soon, even. =) Oh, and lol at your son’s “discriminating taste.” We’ve got quite a bit of that around here, too.
Those both look so very tasty! I love that you have an extra stash of cookie dough in your freezer for your son. What a very nice and sweet mom you are! The pie plate is lovely and so is the bowl that you served the crisp in.
I’m so glad that Corbin enjoyed these! It’s so exciting, especially when picky eaters appreciate home baked desserts.
I made the crisp last week and loved it, but I haven’t gotten to the cookies yet. I’ve heard nothing but good things about them, so I’m really looking forward to making them. Both of your treats look wonderful, and your new pie plate is beautiful! Congrats on winning it!
Corbin really takes excellent photos, everything looks lovely. I’m glad you enjoyed these fall treats. Congrats on winning that pretty pie plate. I feel the same way about giveaways: the more you enter the better chance you have to win!
I have to admit I wasn’t jazzed about any of this month’s recipes, but after reading so many over the top posts about them, I’m very excited. I’m glad you found a cookie to reward Corbin with, and I love your pie plate! Congrats on winning it.
Both look great! It must have really smelled like fall in your kitchen!
Oh! How I love that brown dish! But I also know for a fact that I love what’s in the dish… Mmmmmm… well done, Amy Ruth!
So fun! Love th pie plate!
I didn’t make the crisp (although I did make the cookies), but yours looks gorgeous (and I can only assume, tastes wonderful too!). And congratulations on the pie plate!
